Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the Plek & Setup service

Is this service really free?
Yes — the Plek and Setup service is included at no additional charge with eligible instrument purchases. There's nothing extra to add at checkout.
Which guitars and basses are eligible?
Eligible instruments are tagged "Plek'd Eligible" on their product pages. The customization form will automatically appear above the Specs Section when you view a qualifying listing.
What string brands and gauges can I choose from?
You can specify your preferred string brand, type, and gauge in the setup preferences form when viewing the product page. We carry most major string brands, gauges, and options. If we are unable to match your request, we will contact you and find a similar match to complete the service.
Aren't certain brands Plek'd and Setup from the factory already?
Yes, some brands we carry — like Martin — are already Plek'd from the factory. We still offer our service on these instruments because our setup is customized to your requests. Factory specs don't account for personal preferences like lower action, which can require neck relief adjustments, fret leveling checks, and nut and saddle work to achieve a clean, buzz-free result. Not every factory Plek'd instrument needs fretwork, but every guitar that leaves our shop has been properly serviced to your exact specifications.
Will the instrument be ready to play right out of the box?
Yes. Your instrument will be fully set up and ready to play, though climate changes during transit can affect tuning. Simply re-tune when it arrives and the setup will be exactly as you requested. The more detail you provide in your setup preferences, the more precisely we can dial it in for you.
What if I don't submit my setup preferences?
If you didn't fill out the setup form at the time of purchase, reach out to us as soon as possible with your preferences and we'll take care of it. If we don't receive a form with your order, we'll still go over the instrument and ensure it's properly set up to factory specs before it ships.
How accurate is the Plek machine? Why is it better than a normal setup done by hand?
The Plek machine operates with a measurement and cutting tolerance of 0.01mm (0.0004") — far beyond what's achievable by hand. That said, it's ultimately a tool. What makes the difference is the technician using it, and ours use it to make sure every guitar we sell is properly set up and ready to play when it reaches you.
Do you only Plek and Setup guitars that you sell online?
No — we offer our Plek and Setup service for in-store customers as well. If you have an instrument you'd like us to work on, find a location with a Plek machine available below and give them a call. They'll be happy to get you taken care of.
